Located on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, 85km from the International Airport, Barberyn Reef is one of few resorts that can be described as being literally "on the beach". Sand stretches for miles along the shore and the resort is sheltered by a long coral reef running the length of the property, forming a natural swim lagoon. Barberyn provides a unique environment enabling guests to combine the benefits of Ayurveda with a memorable tropical vacation. Since Barberyn Reef Resort first started offering Ayurvedic holidays to overseas guests some 24 years ago, it has maintained the highest reputation and continues to be the leader in this field.
ABOUT THIS CENTRE:
Welcome to Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort, Sri Lanka's pioneer health resort specializing in Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of medicine dating back about 5000 years. Ayurveda tackles the stresses and ailments of modern living in a uniquely natural and holistic way. The resort is now re-opened after an extensive renovation and refurbishment retaining the warm and friendly ambience that guests have come to love. It may seem bizarre to claim all-pervasive "knowledge" of something as utterly intangible as life itself. Yet the literal translation of Ayurveda is "knowledge" - or more precisely, the knowledge of what is required to ensure a long life of optimal physical, mental and spiritual health.
The Barberyn approach to Ayurveda is a serious and profound one, staying true to the Ayurvedic principle of restoring the equilibrium in body, mind and spirit. For over two decades the Barberyn Ayurvedic Health Centre has been one of the most respected in Sri Lanka. From a small beginning in 1982 the health centre is now an extensive facility providing from the simple to the most complex Ayurveda therapies. The research and development section continues to refine the products and the treatment and returning guests are delighted with the continuing improvements.

We provide Ayurvedic food which is both healthy and delicious. In Ayurvedic science diet is considered an important complementary part to medicine. A special diet consistent with the doctor's diagnosis and the recommended treatment is one of the core therapies in Ayurveda.
As a result, ayurveda food is taken very seriously at Barberyn Ayurveda resorts. But this doesn't mean a strict regime of bland, tasteless or bitter vegetarian dishes prescribed by physicians. On the contrary, our kitchen is one of our greatest assets and the dishes our cooks prepare will surprise and delight you every day of your stay.
At breakfast you'll find a buffet with fresh fruit, fruit juices, herbal soups, home-baked breads & cookies and a selection of Sri Lankan breakfast dishes. For lunch we offer a wide selection of mild fish, vegetable and herbal curries arranged in a beautiful buffet. In the evening we serve you a set vegetarian menu on an option with fish except on Saturdays when we have our Sri Lankan night with an extended buffet where chefs prepare typical local dishes in your presence.
In Ayurveda food and drinks are classified according to their taste - sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent - and thus by their influence on the doshas (body energies). The goal is to represent all tastes in every meal, but with specific combinations recommended for each individual guest.
At Barberyn Ayurveda resorts you will find an Ayurvedic doctor or dietician at hand during meal times to advise you on the suitability of specific vegetables, herbs and spices and to help you select / avoid the dishes according to your prescribed treatment. Your herbal elixir and the instructions from the doctors at the health centre will be on your individual table. This care and attention to diet is something unique to Barberyn Ayurveda resorts.
The accommodation at Barberyn Reef consists of 75 rooms, the majority of which has been recently renovated / refurbished.
