About the Centre:
Elemental Medicine represents the combined qualities and experience of Dr. Devlin and Dr. Savastio. With the patient’s wishes always in mind, they often collaborate in patients' care so that patients can receive the best of what they both have to offer.
Elemental Medicine's goal is to understand you, your medical condition and overall health much in the same way as the old time general family doctor did. Elemental Medicine listen to you to get the whole story; they teach you how to understand your constitution, and what it tells you about the mind and body you live with everyday. They will work with you to create a plan which may involve lifestyle changes, botanical medicines, homeopathy, nutritional supplements as well as natural therapies that will help you to reach your health goals. All of these modalities are based on modern science as well as the timeless wisdom of constitutional medicine.
Dr. George Savastio
Dr. Savastio has been practicing naturopathic medicine since shortly after graduating from the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2001. Dr. Savastio and his wife, Dr. Beth Devlin, opened their first practice in Connecticut, the Connecticut Center for Natural Therapies. While there, they offered a combination of naturopathic medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine. They’ve always had a curious mind, and they’ve been drawn to study naturopathic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and Anthroposophically extended medicine at various times. All of those systems add something to Elemental Medicine. Prior to becoming a doctor, Dr. Savastio's interest in health and fitness led him to a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a career at the YMCA in New Britain, CT. At that time he was a highly ranked trail-runner, and he still loves to help athletes reach their potential. One of his grandfathers from generations ago was a Seneca, and he's always been drawn to Native American practices.
Dr. Beth Devlin
In her work she uses herbs, homeopathy and nutrition as well as Manual Therapy and hydrotherapy to help patients achieve their health goals. She will often order lab tests as indicated and she also perform gynecological exams. She adheres to the philosophy of Naturopathic medicine and strive to treat people as individuals in a caring patient-centered setting. She believes strongly in the individual’s ability to heal with proper support from natural remedies.
Dr. Devlin was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. Before attending Naturopathic School, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut, where she majored in biology and minored in Human Values and the Environment. While working towards my bachelor’s degree she was also employed in health education and management. For a time she was a medical assistant and manager of local clinics. She worked as well in homeless shelters as a licensed HIV counselor. After graduating from Trinity college she accepted a position as office manager for a Naturopathic practice in West Hartford, CT. Although she had dabbled in the use of natural remedies this was my first real introduction to the power of Naturopathic Medicine. Soon after she decided to attend naturopathic school.

The philosophy of naturopathic medicine is as timeless as nature herself. In practice it is continually refined by new discoveries and research. Based on simple, safe and effective natural remedies for disease, it often offers cures for diseases resistant to treatment by the orthodox medical establishment. It is suited to the treatment and prevention of all illnesses. By supporting the body’s own ability to heal with the use of natural substances and therapies one can gain the health, clarity and peace of mind that is natural for a human being.
The concept of homeopathy is quite different from conventional medicine. It is safe, gentle and inexpensive. Homeopathy is very powerful when the correct remedy is prescribed. It is based on the “law of similars” or “like cures like”, a concept that dates back thousands of years. Hipppocrates noticed that an herb given in a low dose would cure the same symptoms it would produce at high or toxic levels. The father of homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, expanded upon this discovery in the late 1700’s, spending most of life experimenting with or proving various remedies. There are over 3000 homeopathic remedies represented in today’s Homeopathic Materia Medicas. Remedies come from the plant, mineral and animal kingdoms, and are formulated in minute doses using a unique process called potentization.
Botanical medicine is the use of herbs in order to bring about a state of balance in the treatment of a specific condition. A well-chosen botanical formulation works with the body’s own efforts to heal itself. Botanical medicines can be an integral part of an individualized specific treatment plan. Herbal medicine has been used since the dawn of humankind. There is a wealth of experiential evidence of their safety and effectiveness, which is now being added to and supported by modern scientific research.
As a naturopath, Dr. Devlin treats people rather than diseases. This is a therapy that can’t be properly understood until you try it. It comes from the rich tradition of therapies from the Ayurvedic system of India. It is frequently used in combination with massage and steam therapies, but works wonderfully on its own as well to quiet the nervous system and induces a state of peace usually attainable only through years of practice of meditation. It consists of allowing a steady stream of warmed oil, to which herbs have been added according to Ayurvedic recipes, to pour over the forehead for a period of 20 – 30 minutes as you relax on the massage bed.
Herbal warm oil massage (Abhyanga)
This is a wonderful cleansing treatment that comes to us from the tradition of Ayurveda, the natural medicine system of India. It consists of one or two therapists applying warmed oil, to which herbs have been added, to the skin, and working it into the tissues. The massage and herbs loosen toxins stored in the fat tissues, and promote circulation of the lymphatic system. Works best when followed by the steam bath (swedana), but is pretty amazing on its own as well.
Steam Bath (Swedana)
Often follows herbal warm oil massage, but also a wonderful treatment in its own right. A canopy is placed over the body, with only the head left uncovered. Steam then fills the tent, while you can breathe the cool air if the room and keep the head relatively cool. This is a terrific detoxification treatment that literally “sweats out” the toxins that have been prepared for release by the herbal warm oil massage.
Herbal warm oil enema (Basti)
This treatment cleanses the colon while also nourishing and lubricating it. The colon is considered to be the seat, or home, of the Air element in the body. If the Air element is aggravated, as it is in most Americans, the colon will become dry and malnourished. This treatment, which consists of introducing warmed oil, herbs and water into the colon can affect the body in many ways beyond its ability to cleanse. It helps to bring the Air element to a state of balance and harmony with the other elements, resulting in greater health throughout the body.
Acupuncture is an extremely versatile treatment that can help in a great variety of cases. It is well known for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation, but it can also be employed to direct positive energy and vitality to any organ, or to calm the nervous system. The goal of treatment is to restore a proper balance of Qi, or energy, within the channels through which it circulates.
This is often the treatment of choice for spinal pain, whether in the neck, upper or lower back. It is often combined with CranioSacral Therapy for maximum effect. It consists of quick, short movements applied to the spine in order to relieve tension in the surrounding musculature and restore the joints to proper alignment.
This treatment combines gentle with powerful, always a good combination in our book. It is a hands-on therapy performed with subtle movements and pressure to areas of restriction found in the layer of connective tissue that underlies the skin. Excellent for sensitive souls in particular, but powerful in relieving musculoskeletal pain for anyone willing to give it a try.
