Sunethri Ayurvedashram is located at Mathikkunnu village, around 16 kms from Thrissur town and around 5 kms off the National Highway 47. Mathikunnu is a beautiful village in the foothills of the Sahyadri mountain ranges (the Western Ghats). A famous landmark here is the Mathikunnu Bhagavathy Temple, which attracts thousands of devotees each week. Close by, in Trikkur, is another famous cave temple, the Trikkur Mahadeva temple.

Ayurvedic Ophthalmology (Nethrachikitsa)

India has an age old tradition in ophthalmology (Nethrachikitsa in Sanskrit; nethra: eye, chikitsa: therapy, treatment) which is as old as the practice of scientific Ayurveda. It is a sub-speciality of the branch called Shalakyatanthra. Our state of Kerala has a rich background in Nethrachikitsa, academically as well as traditionally. At Sunethri, we provide ayurvedic treatment for diseases/disorders of the eyes with unparalleled expertise and dedication. The commonly attended conditions include: Myopia (short-sight), Hypermetropia (long-sight), Astigmatism, inflammations and infections like Conjunctivitis, Keratitis, Uveitis, blepharitis, recurrent stye, scleritis, sjogren's disease, etc., degenerative eye diseases like Retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, optic atrophy, lazy eye(amblyopia), computer-related disorders like Dry Eye (computer vision syndrome), Glaucoma, allergic conditions like central serous retinopathy, spring catarrh, etc, etc..

Shalakyatanthra deals with the health and diseases of head and neck. Ears, nose and paranasal sinuses, throat and oral cavity all come under this along with the eyes. Sunethri being a referral centre of Shalakyatanthra provides treatments for various ailments of these body parts. The general conditions include sensory neural hearing impairment, Meniere's disease (with triad of tinnitus or whistling in ears, vertigo, and sensory-neural hearing loss), sinusitis, nasal polyps, loss of smell, recurrent throat infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis etc.), gum bleed, spongy gum, head aches of various origin, and migraine.

Our chief physician and Director, a post-graduate in Ayurveda, Dr.Prasad is one among the few practitioners in Kerala working in the speciality of Shalakyatanthra.  He had his BAMS (Ayurvedacharya)  from Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda college, Thrissur; and MD (Ay.) (Ayurveda Vachaspathi) from Govt Ayurveda college, Thiruvananthapuram.  He is a direct disciple of the renowned Acharya Vaidyabhooshanam K.Raghavan Thrumulpad.  Dr.Prasad is a regular contributor of scientific and popular articles and essays in different magazines and journals in Malayalam and English.  He edits a quarterly journal called ‘Bharatiya Vaidya Samvadam’ published in Malayalam, which is a high-end magazine in the field of principles and practice of Ayurveda.  Dr.Prasad is a pioneer in ayurvedic system to work with autistic kids and to devote time to develop a systematic protocol for their treatment.
